Worm Farms

Choosing your Worms:
Composting worms, such as Tiger worms, Red worms and Indian Blue worms are the only speciesthat live, work and breed well in the environment of a worm farm.
Earthworms from the garden will not survive.
When purchasing your worms, be sure to get at least 1000 composting worms. Any less willretard the effectiveness of the worm farm. The worms will double their population within a couple of months. The worms will determine their own population for the size of the worm farm.

Set-up and Operation
1. Select a cool shaded location for your worm farm.
2. Ensure you have appropriate 'bedding' in the bottom of the worm farm for the worms to live in. This can be castings, coir (coconut fibre) or shreaded newspaper.
3. Spread the worms and contents of their packaging over the bedding. Worms do not like sunlightso they will bury themselves quickly.
4. Start feeding your worms, a small amount to begin with. After a week they should have settled in. Maintain approximately 2cm cover of food over the surface.
***Be careful not to OVERFEED the worms.***
Overfeeding can be determined by the amount of feed remaining each week.
5. Cover the worms and bedding with a moist hessian bag. This will help keep the moisture in and the light out. It also encourages the worms to come to the top to feed.
6. If you have a worm farm that has a liquid collection vessel at the bottom, remember to empty it regularly or the level of liquid will rise and begin to drown the worms. It is surprising how quickly the container will fill with liquid fertiliser.

Worm farms take minimal time to set-up and maintain, however regular inspections and feedingshould be made to ensure the farm continues to be productive. You can assist the worms by cuttingthe feed into smaller pieces, this is not mandatory but will help with speed up the conversion of waste to organic castings.
Feeding can be done once a week by keeping the food scraps in a container in the fridge and feedto the worms weekly or when the container is full.

Worm Food
There are some food scraps that should not be fed to the worms. A complete list is includedin the worm menu pdf.
